Recent Revelations
Alternative post title: you probably already know this, but…
To whit: three recent revelations that have made a difference in my life, and might in yours, too.
Cottage cheese is actually… good.
Like many of our fellow Millennials, John and I are on a quest to add more protein to our diets. We’re drinking Chobani yogurt shakes, we’re eating grilled chicken, we’re switching to Banza, but it was only a matter of time before we came face-to-face with one of the most common protein-packing suggestions: cottage cheese. Pale, lumpy, suspicious-seeming cottage cheese.
Dubiously, I added some to my cart at the grocery store. We got it home, cracked open the lid, and set to experimenting.
In a surprising turn of events, we were immediate converts, and we both eat it almost daily now.
Some of our favorite uses: anywhere we’d have put sour cream (like on tacos). Anywhere we’d have put mayonnaise (like on a turkey sandwich or to bind egg salad). Mixed with hot sauce and spooned generously over grilled chicken chunks for a quick lunch. Mixed with everything-but-the-bagel seasoning or Hidden Valley Farms powder as a ranch-like dip for raw veggies. Blended with fruit compote and a little honey then frozen (seriously so good – it tastes like cheesecake!).
I know we are only at the beginning of our journey. Cottage cheese lovers, where should we head next?

If you want to move, wear athleisure.
While I know some of you would consider yourself recovering athleisure wearers, actively attempting to ditch the daily leggings and put on *real clothes* in the morning, as of this summer I’m a convert to the other side of the coin: ditching the jean shorts and underwire bras and embracing tennis skirts, tanks, and sports bras on a daily basis.
Why? Yes, it’s a bit more comfortable, but my main motivation was noticing how much more willing I was to move throughout the day when already wearing workout clothes: I was more likely to go for a quick walk in the morning or at lunch, to run some stairs, to squeeze in a quick workout, to do some squats and lunges on the sidelines of a soccer game, to go for that evening walk with John.
In a Southern summer, simply walking outside can cause instant sweating. Wearing a sports bra, in particular, makes it easier to accept this and move past it.
I have a sedentary job, and I know that’s not healthy. Moving throughout the day matters to me. Right now, it matters more than wearing a cute outfit and coordinating accessories. Opting for athleisure most days when it’s hot is a simple way to incorporate more of what matters on a daily basis.
And also, of course, it can be cute! You all already know about my game-changing tennis skirt and tank; my beloved Vuori tennis dress is also still going strong. My newest love is Eby bras, which marry the flexibility of a sports bra with the support and shape of a regular bra – no underwire required! I just ordered my second Relief bra yesterday and have signed up to be notified when the T-Shirt bra comes back in stock. Everything on their site is 25% off right now, too!

Packing is easier when you keep your electronics ready to go.
In the division of labor around traveling, John is the keeper of cords. He makes sure the devices that need to be charged are charged, and that both the devices and the chargers are then packed. In a modern household, this can be a lot, and gathering it all up each trip takes a small but not insignificant amount of time.
When I traveled for work this past spring, we unearthed some of our duplicate cords to ensure that both John and I would have a set when we were apart. I popped them all in a little pouch (shout out to a circa 2007 Vera Bradley number I unearthed in my closet) and tucked it in my backpack. When I got home — since these were all extras — I just left the pouch in my backpack. A few weeks later, when packing for a weekend away, it was a revelation to know that every cord was already accounted for.
Of course, I’m now scheming other ways we could put this revelation to use: duplicate toiletries that stay packed? Maybe some kid items? Let’s brainstorm in the comments.
And in case it’s helpful, here’s what’s currently in our electronics bag:
— iPhone charger
— Apple Watch charger
— My wireless headphones (so comfy!) and charger
— The tiniest white noise sound machine
Now, over to you: any recent revelations in your life? Are you already a fan of cottage cheese, choosing athleisure on the daily, or keeping things packed for travel? I’d love to hear!

What a fun post to read! I am very much in the already have all the toiletries packed camp. It makes packing sooo much easier, and I don’t have to worry about forgetting deodorant.
A recent revelation for me is using the freezer. I know that sounds silly, but I would make dinner or cook chicken for lunch and get to the end of the week and have half a piece of chicken of a little less than a serving of leftovers. Now, right after I make a meal, I determine how much I think will be eaten, and put the rest in the freezer. It’s been so nice to waste less food and easily be able to pull out already made food from the freezer when I need it.
On a similar note, having a garage freezer was a revelation for me! Being able to store bulk packages from Costco helped us get so much more out of our membership. (And I think toiletries are my next travel-packing frontier!)
Love this post! And it reminded me how much I have loved your clothing/outfit posts in the past. I love your style and your commitment to finding high quality items from solid brands while staying stylish. I trust your research! Would you consider doing more of those in the future?
I also had a recent revelation about having dedicated supplies for travel. I even went as far as to have dedicated bags for each of my kid’s activities so that I wasn’t swapping stuff out of the same bag over and over again. One bag for swim and that’s where the goggles and pool toys and sunscreen etc. lives full time. All we take out is dirty laundry. And each bag has its own hook by the door. Game changer!
Yes!! Having a pool bag that stays packed by the door is a gamechanger for us in the summer.
And Jen!! Thank you! That is such a nice comment. I do not think of myself as particularly stylish, but I will keep your request in mind for future posts! :)
Cottage cheese is delicious! Try sliced peaches over cottage cheese with a sprinkle of cinnamon on top. Also try it in a smoothie: cottage cheese, strawberries, chia seeds, almond milk.
Ooh yes I have put it in a smoothie before! Love the peaches idea!
Also on team prepacked toiletries and electronics cords! I also keep all my makeup in a bag (rather than in containers in my vanity, for example). This used to be so I could pack it easily and is now so I can do makeup in front of whatever mirror is closest to my children, ha! My favorite part about the prepacked system is that it lets me use all those cute pouches that I love but would otherwise gather dust in my drawers 😊
I think toiletries are next for me! I guess I just worry about them becoming expired if I don’t go through them as quickly?!
You’d be surprised. Things like body wash, shampoo, etc. last ages. I have a little pouch of emergency meds (paracetamol/plasters/antacids) that I keep in my handbag and go through that regularly so I just add that to the travel bag. I also have a little (very little) pouch for my makeup so just chuck that in too. Sunscreen is probably the biggest one to watch out for expiry. Oh! And those little jam jars from hotels are awesome for pills or moisturiser ;)
That same Vera Bradley pouch (in pink!) was my pencil case during law school (2007-2010). Love that yours is getting a new life.
My revelation is that I’m worth a packed lunch when we travel. After two cross-country flights this summer and two smaller trips, knowing that I’ll have a comforting (high protein, haha) lunch packed to eat when I’m ready, and not when the airline tells me I should be, has been a game changer. Also it means I always have a few extra plastic bags when traveling, just in case.
Love this!!
I can always be found in athletic shorts and a t-shirt so this post helped reinforce that decision! I make egg muffins (with eggs, cottage cheese and sausage) that are great for re-heating for a quick bite. I made them at Clerb Retreat this past year if you remember them. Anyhow, I made them last week so I have cottage cheese in my fridge. I am honestly scared to take a bite LOL. It looks so gross! I don’t mind eating it as an ingredient but never have I tried it on its own.. I’m gonna work up my nerve today.
I loved those egg muffins! Going to text you for the recipe :)
I, too, discovered cottage cheese earlier this year and I’m having fun finding new ways to incorporate it into my meal plan. One of my favorites is pancakes. I had given up on pancakes a long time ago because they just felt like empty calories. The recipe I use not only uses cottage cheese but also oatmeal instead of flour, so it’s a win-win. They are fluffy and light and freeze well. I omit the honey as they are tasty enough with the hint of cinnamon and a little drizzle of maple syrup. Here is the recipe I use: https://www.hellospoonful.com/oatmeal-cottage-cheese-pancakes/
That pancake recipe looks so good! Bookmarking it!
I like to keep some toiletries prepacked so it’s easy to just add my toothbrush, and current deodorant to the bag! That is how I make use of the tiny toothpastes they give out at the dentist! All the toiletry bags have a toothpaste!
My recent revelation has been to check out children’s books from the library first before I purchase them! Then I can see if I like the story, pictures, etc. before I buy the book! I love children’s books and want a large collection, but sometimes the covers are SO much better than the contents! We also use the library regularly, but there are many books that I would like to add to our personal collection!
An excellent tip!
I, too, am a recent cottage cheese convert. At first I was just feeding it to my toddler but now postpartum, I’m trying to focus on protein since I have less time to eat and also need to keep my supply up. Anyways I like the good culture brand on toast with tomatoes. It’s like my favorite summer lunch with extra protein :)
I am also team keep toiletries packed, but I keep a bare basics packed (travel size moisturizer, serum and face wash, toothbrush and toothpaste, contact solution and case) and have to add to it if going anywhere other than my parents house!
My recent revelation is having a pouch for each kid and one for me in our boat and tote diaper bag. That way when leaving the house alone or with just one, I can grab just one pouch or take the unnecessary one out! So much less weight!
We buy the Good Culture brand, too! I don’t know if it’s the good branding or what but I do think it tastes better 😂
Feeling inspired! I’ve liked cottage cheese my entire life but I’ve been sleeping on some of these applications. I usually swap ricotta with cottage cheese in recipes since it’s cheaper. I hope once the air gets crisper you can share how you’re wearing athleisure in the fall/winter, especially now that there are way more options available than just leggings!
Oh, I’m going to try cottage cheese in these new, exciting ways. I’m a weirdo because I love it straight out of the tub. :-)
Last year, a friend gifted me a travel cord holder, and it really is a game-changer! I just recently decided to make my own speaking travel set. It holds a clicker and different laptop-to-presenter connectors based on the room setup. Now I need to add an extra laptop charger! It makes it so much easier to have it ready to go. **adds a separate charger to cart
I am a minimalist, however, I keep a duplicate travel bag, fully packed, except for clothes under my bed – complete with charging cords, toiletries (fully duplicated make up set), curling iron, and a straightener. Game. Changer. It doesn’t take any extra space or effort to manage these duplicates, and the amount of time and stress that I save during the packing process is unreal. 😄
Love the Eby relief bra – but hadn’t thought about using it as a sports bra! Light bulb!
Been on the cord and toiletries train for awhile – nice to have one less thing to think about when packing!
I know you know this, but keeping a packing list that includes things for all weather types and trips is a time and life saver!
Your blog is an inspiration to me, Emily; I love your creativity! I’m a big fan of cottage cheese…I eat it with a spoon, in an amazing Amish breakfast casserole recipe, or (one of our favorites!) with canned pineapple!
