Face first

First things first: the Minted giveaway winner has been posted!

Now, out of the hundreds of posts I’ve written on Em for Marvelous, probably fewer than five discuss makeup. This is for a couple reasons. First, I am nowhere near an expert on the topic, and it’s not something I spend a lot of time thinking about or experimenting with. Second, I still think I’m on the hunt for my ideal products, so I don’t really feel as though I’m in a position to make recommendations.

But. In April, I posted about wanting to try Josie Maran’s Argan Oil Daily Moisturizer. I ended up buying the travel size, used it every day since, and then — the ultimate test — repurchased in September (the larger size!). I knew this lotion was special from the first day I tried it, but I didn’t want to recommend it until it passed the ultimate test :)

Everyone’s skin is different, so I have no idea if you’ll have a good experience if you try this lotion. But, if your skin sounds like mine, I’d say give it a shot! Before I tried Josie Maran, my face would be slick by the middle of the day — but then dry, sometimes, too! The JM moisturizer has made my skin drastically less shiny, and I think it’s improved my complexion a bit, too (the star ingredient, argan oil, is touted as skin-repairing and damage-reversing, for what it’s worth). And, as a huge stickler for sunscreen, I’m so happy it has SPF 40!

In case you try it, I use 3 pumps in the morning and 3 at night. It does take some rubbing in, but once it’s absorbed, there’s no white cast, which I’ve heard can be an issue with some zinc oxide sunscreens. I also think it smells good — kind of like blueberries :) And, it’s comforting to know there are no parabens, sulfates, fragrances, or dyes in it.

When I bought the JM moisturizer from Sephora, one of my samples was a Bare Minerals foundation. I ended up using it every day, too, and loved it as well! I purchased a full size Bare Minerals Ready Foundation at the same time as I reordered the JM, and couldn’t be happier. The final effect looks almost airbrushed to me — full but light and natural.

It will probably be another few years before I venture to make another skin/makeup recommendation on here, but I’ve been so happy with these two products that I had to give them a nod. I hope they might be a good solution for some of you!!

Have you found your perfect moisturizer? I’d love to hear!

I have been looking for the perfect moisturizer! My skin is like yours and changes a lot. Do you think the argon oil makes your skin still oily? I might have to pick up a sample!

I’ve been looking for a new moisturizer ever since I randomly developed an allergy to my old one, I cannot wait to try this out!

@Mary No, it definitely doesn’t! It sounds counterintuitive, but I think my skin was actually getting oily because it was too dry, so my oil glands were overcompensating. When I started using the JM moisturizer I also started moisturizing in the morning AND at night (had just been doing it in the morning), and the two together seemed to help my skin balance out!

I love that you posted this! Two times I’ve thought I found the perfect moisturizer but with the first when I started a new bottle it made me break out and the second made me all puffy and red…so it was back to the drawing board! I can’t wait to try this though–like you said the SPF is a huge draw and also that it’s so natural! Thanks for the recommendation!

I love love love love the same products! I use the loose Bare Minerals powder instead. I have dry sensitive skin and I live in humid Florida. The Argan oil is great! I just use one pump and my skin feels great all day. It has also definitely improved my mild breakouts too!

Hi Em,

RE Minted. I love their cards too but I’m finding them too expensive. Do you know if their offering any kind of discount in the future?

thanks,
Emily

Hi Emily, this might sound odd, but how long does it take to rub it in? I’m super low maintenance (bordering on lazy ha ha) and leave home at 6am. I’m desperate to find a moisturizer that doesn’t make me break out so hoping this is the one!

Oh, also, what shade of bare minerals do you use? We have similar skin colours so don’t want to get anything too dark.

I am also a rabid fan of the Josie Maran! I’ve used it for a LONG time and have talked about it on my blog as well! To answer Laurien–it literally absorbs instantly. I use one pump on my face and it’s instantaneously gone.

Not sure RE Emily’s skintone but I use Golden Fair in the Ready Bare Minerals foundation. I save the puffs from the Ready Mineral Veil to apply the foundation with around my eyes, then use a brush for everywhere else and to blend around my eyes. Since I need a ton of concealer around my eyes, I need to use the puff there first or the concealer comes off with the brush.

Yay! Thanks so much!

Hi Laurien! I do maintain that it’s not instantaneous, but it does take a few seconds longer than my previous moisturizer (Oil of Olay) — probably only 15 seconds longer, though. I use “medium beige” (N20) in Bare Minerals and think it’s a great match! Hope that helps!!

Emily,
I came to your blog a few days ago and you had linked to a file that you use for planning your blog posts. I printed a couple of them off and they were so beneficial! I planned out the next two months of my blog posts. I was a bit anxious about my blog being launched, but just sitting down and using your sheet was super helpful! Are you going to share it again?
Thanks
Elizabeth

i’m so bummed – i “pinned” this moisturizer a loooong time ago and have just run out of my usual, so i thought i’d give this new one a try. only to find that it seems to be discontinued?! is this true? i thought you might be privy to a potential new product that has replaced it since you’re such a fan.

@Cassie Oh no!! I’m not sure if it’s officially discontinued, but it doesn’t look like it’s available on Sephora or the JM site currently. Totally bummed!!
